10 months!

Anna turned 10 months last week.  She is growing, growing, growing! Everyday Josh and I say to ourselves, "She is really getting to be a big girl".  Here's why:

- crawling faster, pulling up everywhere, climbing on everything!
- picking up food and eating it - so she can basically feed herself now, though it makes a mess!
- babbling a lot more
- sorting things - clothes, toys, food - she is really into taking things out of a container and putting them back in.

She is really a joy to have around.  She is constantly cracking us up.

Recently, after picking up Anna from the church nursery, one of the workers told me that Anna cries only when another baby cries.  When the baby stops crying, so does Anna.  The worker said, "she is really sensitive to others".   I hope that she really does have a sensitive heart for others as she grows!  I was able to observe this over the weekend when I visited a friend of mine in Oklahoma.  Anytime her 15 month old would cry, so would Anna.  Anna would only stop when she stopped.  It was pretty cute (and loud :) )!

Here is a video of Anna sorting through stuff.  Note: she has a very serious demeanor in this video which is not typical...that makes it even funnier to watch in my opinion!

Michigan Trip

We had a blast in Michigan visiting with family.  All of my immediate and extended family live up there.   Anna was a trooper and settled right in to Grandma and Grandpa's house.  We had our own room in the basement, and Anna slept great down there.  She even started sleeping through the night again while we were there!!

Here are some pictures from our trip:
Anna did great on the trip to MI and was SUPER curious on the plane.

Thank you GiGi for flying with us!
She LOVED Tippie and would squeal in delight anytime she was around.

Playing in the wheel chair with Aunt Robin.

Grandma got her a flower from the garden.

Hanging with Grandma.

Anna and Great Grandma Wallace

Anna loves to play chase!! She wore us all out with this game!

Playing outside with GiGi. We enjoyed great weather while visiting.

Playing with magnets. This was one of her favorite activities!

Dancing with Grandpa! She loved this!
Josh was able to come visit for one weekend while we were there, which was fun.  He and my dad played ping pong non stop.  I don't have any pictures though!

We really enjoyed visiting with everyone.  Anna warmed up to everyone pretty well and really loved all the entertainment and fun!  We are looking forward to some of the family coming to visit this summer!

I realize I didn't take pictures of Anna with my aunts, uncles, or cousins :(.  I guess we were too busy enjoying it all.

A funny story about the plane ride home:  I was really nervous about flying late in the evening, as Anna usually goes to bed between 6 and 7 pm.  Our flight from Chicago was going to leave at 7:30, which meant a melt down was very likely on the plane.  We came close to a melt down, but Anna fought sleep like a champ and played peek-a-boo with everyone around us on the plane.  She was laughing hysterically and being very entertaining.  This made the 1.5 hour plane ride go by quickly.  Several people commented on how happy she was.  I was so thankful that she was deliriously happy instead of fussy.  The Lord really answered my prayer for a good trip home.

Thanks everyone for a great trip! We love and miss y'all!

Big Girl

We're back after visiting family for 10 days!! Anna did great on our trip, and I'll chronicle the whole trip soon.

After looking at some pictures from our trip now and in October, I'm wondering one thing...

How did my baby go from this:

To this :

In a manner of only 6 months?

Time really flies when you have a baby!

Easter Weekend Highlights

We had a wonderful Easter weekend.  Here were the highlights:

- We remembered the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.  He went through a terrible death to pay for our sins and  rose again to give us new life.  It is sweet and humbling to remember the sacrifice He made for us.

- Some friends unexpectedly came to church with us, along with one of the girls in our house.  We were like a big family going into church together, a nice change for us!

- Our friends stayed for lunch [we invited them for lunch at the last minute once we knew they were coming to church with us].

- Anna went for two walks with daddy (she missed a nap and this helps give her down time and fresh air) and played at the nursery at church.

Here are some Easter pics I took of Anna the week before Easter, along with a picture at an event on campus hosted by the African Student Organization.  I only captured 1 smile, but I still love all of her expressions.  I'm bringing some prints to y'all in Michigan :)

We dressed in our African garb!

Two Bunnies! (they were both born in year of rabbit:) )

We had special visitors for lunch!

Baby food: some tips!

So, I've followed the advice of our pediatrician in knowing when to start Anna on cereal, veggies and fruits.  After a friend convinced me that making baby food was easy and WAY cheaper and healthier, I thought "Why not?"  And so began my baby food making adventures. I checked out several library books and read some good internet sites, which I will include later.

Anna started cereal around 4 months.

She started veggies & fruits around 6 months.

We started with carrots, avocados, and sweet potatoes.  It took a little while for her to warm up, but all of these foods were a hit.  Here's how I prepared them:

Carrots (can use for Peas, Sweet Potatoes, etc):  Before I invested in a rice cooker/steamer, I boiled the carrots in a little water.  Here are the steps*:

1.Peel the carrots first, especially if you don't buy organic, because carrot skins can contain a lot of nitrates, which are not good for little babies.

2.Chop the carrots into uniform pieces.

3.Using 1 or 2 cups of water, bring to a boil and then let carrots cook until they will fall apart easily with a fork.

4.Test several pieces to make sure they are all tender.

5.Drain and let cool.  This step really helps when mashing.

6. Add about 1 Tablespoon water (I use tap water now, but started with filtered) and puree with food processor, hand blender, stand up blender, or fork.  Add more water as needed - Anna really liked it more runny at first.
Note:  I used a blender in the beginning, but found it didn't work well.  I use a little single blade chopper now.  Here is a similar one. It works great, as long as you cook the veggies long enough.

7. Serve to hungry baby!

* I have found that using a 1 lb pound bag from walmart will last us 4-5 feedings these days.

Sweet Potatoes*:  Lately, I've been steaming sweet potatoes in our rice cooker, steamer.  This is the one we have and I LOVE it.  But I also like to bake sweet potatoes, so here are the steps for that:

1. Scrub& wash the skins with vegetable brush.

2. Dry skins and poke holes in skins with a fork - VERY IMPORTANT!

3. Wrap potatoes in foil and bake at 350 for an hour.  Here is an alternative way to bake them.

4. Take potatoes out and check if they are soft (unwrap them and check with fork).  If not soft enough, bake 20 more minutes.

5.  Cut them length wise and let them cool. Scoop out the flesh and leave the skins aside (or feed them to a husband).

6.  Mash the flesh of potato well, but you shouldn't need to do too much if cooked well.

7.  Serve to hungry baby :).  Watch out for strings, as sweet potato flesh can be a bit stringy when baked.  Anna did fine with them though.

* 1 sweet potato usually makes 2-3 servings for Anna.

Avocados*:  No cooking involved! Just follow these steps!
1. Make sure the avocado is ripe! It should feel soft to the touch on the outside and when you cut into it, it should be green along the skin and yellow inside - with hardly any brown (but some brown is ok!).
2. I always cut width wise, remove the pit and use a spoon to dig out the fruit.
3. Mash with a fork or spoon.
4. Serve to hungry baby! **

*Bananas are super easy too, but can cause constipation.
** 1 avocado usually makes 2 servings for Anna.  Maybe 3 servings for smaller babies.

A few general tips:
 - Don't feed the baby from the same container that you store the food in.  Baby's saliva can cause the food to become contaminated with bacteria and spoil the whole lot.  Just take out a serving from the container and use a different one.

 - Don't become discouraged if baby doesn't seem excited about the food at first.  Anna always makes a bad face on the first few bites, but if I'm patient, she will usually eat a whole serving of the food.

- Always have some easy foods on hand for when you run out of baby food. I always try to have bananas and avocados around.

- Teach baby a sign to say "All done" or "More" to communicate instead of crying.

- Make several batches of baby food and freeze them to save time.
